Do you ever feel like there's something holding you back from reaching the next level in your career? β Surprisingly, sometimes the biggest obstacle isnβt lack of hard work or skill. It's your ego. And here's how it quietly works against you. It blocks growth by rejecting feedback, turning challenges into personal attacks, and making you defensive instead of thoughtful. β That said, there's a common thread that the most successful leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs (and my coaching clients) I know all share:
They're confident and are exceptionally focused, without their ego getting in the way.
Below are a few steps that can help: β ββ Notice how you feel when criticized ("Wow, that really go to me"). ββ Pause to collect your thoughts before responding. ββ Shift your focus from your personal feelings to finding ways stoically to move forward. ββ β(Pro tip: Most people listen to respond rather than to understand. Don't be that person.) Empathy, and your ability to perspective shift, is a powerful tool. Use it not to necessarily agree with someone's position, but rather to understand why/how they may have communicated what they have. This allows you to detach your perspective from your perception. β When your pride takes over, you risk clouding your judgement or worse, your reaction. Instead, drop your ego to make yourself more approachable, open to learn and ultimately more successful. β You've got this!

βπ Client case study of the week
The Context: My βCareer Success Fast Trackβ’β client has recently stepped into her new role as a first time people manager. She was struggling on how best to support her team, set the right priorities and guide them in their development given a lack of structure in the organization. β βThe Success: She gained the courage needed to have a tough conversation with one of her employees and has already noticed a positive shift in their behavior in just 2 weeks time. This has allowed for a stronger relationship between the both of them. It also helped her realize the power of delivering constructive feedback in a way that benefits her team and their goals. β βThe Strategy: She leveraged my EFM feedback technique that began with empathy to avoid defensiveness from her employee. She then focused in on the issue at hand, why it needs to be improved and how that change would benefit her employee and their development. She then moved forward by suggesting a recommendation her employee could get behind with clear action steps. Check out my recent post on LinkedIn that shares more on this.
