Peak Performers: Executive presence isn't what you think

Hey Reader,

You walked out of that meeting knowing your idea was the right call.

Thirty minutes later, someone else got the credit.

The problem wasn't your idea. It was how it landed.

89% of HR leaders say executive presence is a key factor in determining leadership potential. That said, less than 1 in 3 employees demonstrate it consistently. Not because they lack ability. Because they're focused on the wrong thing.

Real executive presence isn't about performance. It's about perception. It's how people experience your leadership when the stakes are high.

Here's what actually moves the needle.

1. Communicate with clarity and precision.

Strong communicators don't say more. They say what matters, calmly and with conviction. When speaking with senior leaders, lead with the "so what" first. Then build from there.

Not: "We ran a pilot in 3 markets and spent a few weeks testing creative assets..." Instead: "The pilot increased market share by 8%. Here's what made it work."

End your sentences on a downward note. If your voice rises like a question, it signals hesitation. Use intentional pauses before key points. They signal you're comfortable holding the room.

2. Persuade through storytelling.

Data earns attention. Storytelling earns buy-in.

Executives don't want the full backstory. They want context, relevance, and meaning. Anchor your work to what they already care about.

Not: "I'd like to share some updates on the initiative." Instead: "This initiative directly supports our Q3 priority to improve retention and reduce churn by 10%."

When things go sideways, use resilience as your story. Say something like: "When our first plan fell through, I pivoted within 48 hours, secured a new vendor, and still hit our deadline one week ahead of schedule."

That sentence alone changes how a room sees you.

3. Build strategic relationships with intention.

Your presence is established in the quiet moments. The side conversation before the big meeting. The cross-functional ask. How others describe you when you're not in the room.

If only your direct manager knows your value, you are capped.

Before your next major presentation, use this script: "I'd love to run this by you before I present it next week. Anything you'd add or challenge?"

This does three things: strengthens your idea, earns early buy-in, and signals that you're inclusive and thorough. All before you set foot in the room.

Once a quarter, audit your internal network. Ask yourself: Who knows my work and impact? Who advocates for me when I'm not around? Where do I need stronger visibility?

This week's career move: Before your next meeting with a senior leader, write your 60-second executive summary. One outcome. Three supporting messages. Practice it out loud until it lands without hesitation.

Perception is built before you walk into the room.

Let's make sure you get it right.
