  Start thinking in headlines, outcomes, and tradeoffs to position yourself as a strategic partner.
  → “I deprioritized [X] to deliver on [Y] as intended. It’s a better ROI for the quarter.”​
  → “I escalated this early to avoid downstream issues for our Q3 targets.”
  ​
• Refine your message: Lead with context and land with clarity.​
  Skip the oversharing of details to keep it short, smart and assertive.
  → “We’re 90% to launch and the only risk is timing right now. Based on [X], can we approve the proposed timeline shift?”​
  → “I flagged 2 budget overages early and course-corrected with procurement, so we’re now back on track.”
  ​
• Control the moment: Keep your calm and composure. ​
  VPs aren’t out to get you. They’re out to make smart calls. If they push or challenge you, it’s pressure-testing, not personal.
  → “Thanks for that. Here’s how I’d sharpen the recommendation based on your input.”​
  → “That’s helpful context. I’ll adjust the approach and close the loop by Thursday.”

Pro tip: Before any meeting with executives, write down your top 3 messages and practice them beforehand. This way, you feel ready to share them when it matters most.
