Hard truth: People want to help, but not if you make them guess how.
Vague asks get ignored. Specific asks get traction.

When it comes to networking, most professionals wait too long, send the wrong message, or try to sound overly polished. Here's 4 of my templates to ask for job leads with clarity, confidence, and zero cringe.

1. Former manager or mentor

→ “I’m exploring my next move and really value your perspective. I’m focused on [industry/role], ideally with [X qualities]. If you hear of anything that aligns or know someone I should speak to, I’d be grateful for the intro.”

2. Close peer or colleague

→ “Hey [Name], I’m in the market for a new role and wanted to see if you’ve heard of anything in [space]. I’m looking for [specific role/type of company], and if anything comes to mind, or if you know someone hiring, I’d love to connect.”

3. Loose ties (distant LinkedIn connection, acquaintance)

→ “Hi [Name], I’ve been following your work at [Company], looks like a great place. I’m currently exploring my next role and targeting [X type of role]. If your team’s hiring or there’s someone I should reach out to, I’d be grateful for any direction you can share.”

4. Former teammate who’s been hired somewhere new

→ “Congrats on the move to [Company]. Looks like an amazing next step for you! I’m actually exploring new opportunities myself in [type of role] and wondered if your team’s hiring or if you’d be opposed to referring me if a role pops up that fits?”

You’ve got this!
