The Inner Circle: What everyone gets wrong about mentors I Kellie Goldstein (Michael Kors)

May 23, 2025

Welcome to my Friday issue of Peak Performers, sharing my latest podcast episode and practical insights to help you stand out, lead with confidence, and land better opportunities.

As always, a big thank you for all of your support 🙌

You don’t get mentors by hoping someone magically notices your potential.
You get mentors by asking for them in a way that’s clear, confident, and respectful of their time.

If you’re not asking, you’re waiting. And waiting is not a career strategy.

Instead, use my Align-Aim-Ask template:

Align: Start with shared context or a compliment rooted in respect, not flattery.

“I’ve really appreciated your perspective in our recent team discussions, especially around [topic]. It helped me think differently about how I approach my [project/challenge].”

Aim: Be precise on what kind of support you’re looking for and why them.

“I’m focused on growing in [specific skill/career path], and I noticed you’ve navigated that path incredibly well. I’d love to learn from your experience so I can take control of my growth here too.”

Ask: Make it easy to say yes by being specific and low-lift.

“Would you be open to a 20-minute chat in the next few weeks? I’d really value your guidance on [1–2 clear questions]. If not, I completely understand as I know you're extremely busy, but I thought I’d ask.”

Pro tip: Don’t call it mentorship out of the gate. Not everyone will commit to being a mentor right away, but they’ll easily say yes to a one-off conversation that builds into something meaningful over time.

Mentorship isn’t given. It’s earned by showing initiative, clarity, and respect.

You’ve got this!

🌟 High-impact highlights

  • This past week, we surpassed 975,000 learners on my LinkedIn Learning courses. Thank you so much for all of the support. I set a goal this year to reach over 1 million learners and we are so close and we're only May. Check out all of my courses here.
  • How to make hard conversations at work easier. 10 scripts you can use.
  • This week, I led a live workshop inside Ali Abdaal's private Productivity Lab community! This was certainly a full circle moment for me as I've admired Ali's work for years. My workshop focused on how to balance a full-time job while building a business and the feedback has been amazing. Let this be your reminder to shoot your shot and make bold moves. I did a post on that here.

🎧 New podcast episode

EP. 15 - What everyone gets wrong about mentors | Kellie Goldstein (Michael Kors)

In this week's episode, I'm joined by Kellie Goldstein, VP of North America Retail Merchandising at Michael Kors, who shares the real story behind growing her career in the fast-paced industry of luxury fashion.

From her former work at Coach, Dolce & Gabbana and now at Michael Kors leading merchandising strategy across fashion’s biggest brands, Kellie’s path is a perfect example of pivoting, self-advocating, and growing through discomfort.

Together, we break down how to seek out the right mentors, mistakes to avoid when choosing mentors, what qualities are most important in building your support system to grow faster, and more.

Watch now on YouTube.

What you’ll takeaway from
my episode with Kellie Goldstein:

  1. What qualities matter most in mentors.
  2. Mistakes to avoid that can hurt mentorship relationships.
  3. The difference between mentorship and coaching.
  4. Why saying 'yes' before you’re ready leads to faster growth.
  5. How to build the courage to go after what you want.
  6. How to mentor others to drive lasting impact.

And so much more!
